The Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona will hold its annual meeting and awards celebration on Wednesday, May 17 at 7 p.m., at the Tucson Jewish Community Center.
Heading the list of this year's award winners are Man of the Year Gene Goldstein and Woman of the Year Brenna Lacey. Goldstein is the general chair of the 2006 Federation/UJA Campaign, which is on track to be the most successful fundraising drive in community history. Lacey is the president of the Jewish Community Foundation.
Julie Feldman and Rodney Glassman will receive the Gary I. Sarver Young Woman and Young Man of the Year Awards, which include stipends to be applied toward an Israel mission or attendance at the General Assembly of United Jewish Communities.
Peter and Pat Likins will be honored for their years of service to the Tucson community. Peter Likins is retiring from his post as president of the University of Arizona this summer.
The winners of the 2006 Meritorious Service awards are Fern Feder, Andrew Levy, Ron Kolker, Deborah Meyer and Mark Ross. The Ben and Betty Brook Community Professional of the Year is Federation Chief Financial Officer Amy Merkel.
A special recognition award will be presented to Janet Marcotte, executive director of the YWCA of Tucson. The Outstanding Judaic Teacher Award, determined by a Coalition for Jewish Education committee, is Jessica Issaharov of Tucson Hebrew Academy. The Ben and Sally Smith Memorial College Youth Award was determined by a committee of the University of Arizona Hillel Foundation. The winner this year is Erin Searle. The winner of the Rabbi Arthur R. Oleisky Teen Recognition Award is Elayna Direnfeld.
Two local organizations will share this year's Meyer and Libby Marmis Humanitarian Award. The organizations are BICAS - Bicycle Inter-Community Action & Salvage and the Tucson Arthritis Support League.
The awards will be presented at the May 17 event. The celebration will also feature the installation of the Federation's 2006-2007 board of directors and recognition of outgoing leadership, including Federation Chair Bobby Present and Women's Division Campaign Chair Deanna Evenchik. Steven Lightman will be installed as the new chair of the Federation.
Wine and cheese will be served prior to the program, which will include music by the Klezmopolitans. The cost of the event is $10 per person. The co-chairs of this year's annual meeting and awards Celebration are Nanci Levy and Matt Rothman. The awards committee was chaired by David Wolsky.
